SA to go dark for Earth Hour
South Africa will go dark tonight but it's not because of load shedding.
Millions will join the global campaign of Earth Hour to raise awareness on pollution and the human carbon footprint by turning their lights off for just an hour.
CEO of the World Wide Fund for Nature South Africa, Morne Du Plessis, says this year the focus is on the broken relationship between people and nature.
Du Plessis says the COVID-19 pandemic has shed light on an age-old crisis - our dependency on fossil fuel.
He says during the lockdown the usually clogged freeways and roaring industries were put to rest - giving mother earth a small break from daily pollution.
"In places like Mpumalanga province we were able to see clear skies in a way that had not been possible for many decades. This has to be a future we strive for", Du Plessis said.
"We deserve a future and our children deserve a future where we keep our skies and river systems clear while we breathe clean and fresh air", he said.
Earth Hour will be done virtually this year at 8.30pm across 180 countries.
