Eskom moves to power alert level 1, warning of possible loadshedding

Eskom has not had to implement rolling blackouts since July 22.

Loadshedding could be implemented at short notice, Eskom warned today.

Several breakdowns have seen the state-owned utility placed under severe pressure.

“This will necessitate an increased utilisation of emergency generation reserves.”

Some 14 925MW had been lost, while a further 4 759MW of capacity was out on planned maintenance.

“We might be forced to implement loadshedding at short notice,” Eskom warned, adding that it expected a number of generating units to return to service from breakdown over the next few days.

There has been no loadshedding since July 22.
