Power restoration in Randburg a problem after loadshedding

RANDBURG – Local ward councillor says he feels the same frustration as residents, regarding power outages after load-shedding.

Suburbs in Randburg suffered lengthy power outages following load-shedding in the first week of June.

Ward 102 councillor David Potter took to Twitter to answer some of the questions residents had, with a public question-and-answers session about the issue.

“Ward councillors are fully aware that when the load-shedding block ends, the power to Bordeaux, Blairgowrie and Ferndale does not always come on, or trips a few seconds or minutes after it gets initially restored,” he later told Randburg Sun, adding that this was likely due to an ‘inrush current’ which trips the network.

“I wrote to City Power management on 19 March and again on 1 June expressing the concern related to frustration this causes. The City Power network seems to be struggling with overload (probably due to winter power demands on the network) and they request that when load-shedding takes place, all large-power draw appliances like your geysers, heaters, pool pumps and the like be turned off so that City Power can turn on the network with ease at the end of the load-shedding block.”

Potter said if residents all do their bit, perhaps the power will not trip on restoration. “Your frustration is ours, and it is also the City’s,” he concluded.
